Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal cells that build up in the bone marrow and blood and interfere with normal blood cells. As a matter of fact, the 5-year survival rate for people 20 and older with AML is approximately 24%. Whereas, for people younger than 20, the survival rate is 67%. That's because their body is too busy making the leukemic blast cells.
